IMAGING ACROSS SCALES

Purdue’s sophisticated instruments and collaborative ethic promote an ever-deeper look at the basics of life science.

Light and fluorescence microscopy

Purdue’s imaging facility is a research resource for Purdue faculty, staff, students, and other academics and non-academics seeking access to state-of-the-art light microscopy for their research and development work. We specialize in confocal, multi-photon, and light-sheet microscopy, as well as pre-clinical bioluminescence/fluorescence and computed tomography.

Cryo-EM

Purdue’s cryo-electron microscopy facility is a member of the Purdue EM Consortium and a designated Indiana CTSI core facility. It is available to researchers at Purdue and other academic institutes as well as industry users. It provides state-of-the-art instruments and expertise for high resolution structure determination of viruses, larger macromolecular complexes, nano-particles, as well as tomographic visualization of virus-cell interactions by cryo-EM and three-dimensional (3-D) image reconstruction.

Electron microscopy

The Purdue Electron Microscopy Center provides Purdue researchers access to state-of-the-art electron microscopy instrumentation and offers service, consultation and training to assist scientists in achieving their research objectives. There are both self-use and service options available. Our equipment and microscopes are located in three separate Purdue buildings—Whistler, Birck, and Armstrong.

Histology

Purdue’s full-service histology laboratory, supported by the College of Veterinary Medicine, provides general histology, immunohistochemistry, frozen sectioning, decalcified and undecalcified bone histology, and slide digitization services. It also manages a large and small animal necropsy room. The laboratory may collaborate with investigators in the development of new techniques and in the characterization of animal models (e.g. phenotyping of genetically altered mice). Expertise in the processing of bone and implants is available.

MRI

Purdue’s facility for life science magnetic resonance imaging is supported by the College of Health and Human Sciences, housing a 3T Siemens MAGNETOM Prisma MRI scanner. The facility is dedicated to the advancement of basic and applied life science research on the Purdue campus with an emphasis in understanding human health and disease. Examples of current research topics include nutrition, environmental health, psychology, basic brain research, speech, language and auditory disorders, motor disorders, autism, cancer, and neurodegenerative disorders.
