Purdue researchers identify possible drug candidate which inhibits EV-D68 enterovirus

Enterovirus D68 (EV-D68) is a causative agent of recent outbreaks of respiratory illness in children in the United States. Purdue researchers have shown that pleconaril, a capsid-binding compound that had been developed as an anti-rhinovirus drug, binds and inhibits EV-D68, suggesting that pleconaril may be a possible drug candidate to alleviate EV-D68 outbreaks. The results were reported in the January issue of the journal Science.
